wildlife in patgonia

Yesterday we went out to see the wildlife in Patagonia. We docked at a city called Puerto Madryn and took a bus to a game reserve on the Valdes Peninsula. On the way we saw Guanaco which look like a lama. I don't have time to look up a picture on google for you so you have to do it yourself. We also saw Darwin's Rhea which look like an ostrich. We went whale watching for about 2 hours. We were blessed with wonderful sightings of whales right near our boat. This area is a whale breeding and calfing area so we saw mother whales with their year old calfs. They will be leaving for Antarctica soon. We also saw similiar whales (Right Whales) right off our boat this morning. We probably saw about 6 whales, some of them were really quite close to the boat. We are a small enought ship that the captain can slow down and circle around the whales which he did for about a half of an hour. A great way to wake up in the morning.

After whale watching yesterday we ate at a local diner. It was an OK meal but not our usual quality that we have here on our ship. We stayed in that city until about 11 last night and then took off for the Falkland Islands. We have 2 days at sea to the Falklands and then 2 days on the islands. We have been blessed with wonderful weather and the captain says that we should continue to have good weather so our stay at the Falklands should be nice.

  1. The whales are soooo cool! I can't believe how close you are. The time has flown by since you left on your trip! It is hard to believe you are on the final stretch. I am looking forward to talking with you and hearing all about the trip.

Things have been good around here. Winter blew in Thursday night and closed some schools on Friday. I had taken the day off so I didn't even have to go out into the weather. The snow has helped me get more into the holiday spirit. All my Christmas decorations are up. We went with mom yesterday and got her tree and our tree in the afternoon. We will get our tree decorated tonight...then it will really feel like Christmas!

Love you and can't wait to see you!
    Love, Jess
